85 Omni GLH Project car, bought it this spring with the intention of parting it out, after finding the underbody in such great shape I decided to save it. The engine in the car was seized when I purchased it, and the doors and rear hatch were all rusty, not to mention the paint was in sad shape on the rest of the car. The interior is in fair shape and should clean up well. A vintage Direct Connection Roll bar gives the interior a serious look. The car also has a rare Direct Connection Cowl hood scoop supplying air to an intercooler mounted over the valve cover (also a Direct Connection Part). All together it makes for a a very neat package of vintage parts added on to an already fun to drive Omni GLH.
In an effort to save this car I have purchased an 88 horizon that is rust free and will donate most of it's sheetmetal to the omni. I also found a very clean and nice running 85 TI engine that will replace the one in the car. A couple trips to the junkyard have turned up abunch of additional parts that car needs, and to date I have approx 80% of the parts needed to complete the car properly.
Future plans are to remove the current engine, repaint the engine compartment and install the other engine I have. After the car is running the body work will be completed and a fresh black paint job will be applied. Of course along the way the suspension will checked as well as the brakes and any other items that need attention. My goal is to have the car completed by spring of 2003. Check here for updates...
Pictures of the car as it was when I purchased it in spring of 2002
9/23/02 - The car finally goes into the garage, the work begins. Tonight the broken grill and headlight bezels were removed. The radiator, A/C condensor and assorted brackets and underhood parts were removed to allow the engine to come out. The hood was also removed to gain extra clearance.
10/06/02 - The old locked up engine comes out. The front bumper is removed as well as the headlights and almost anything that will unbolt under the hood.
10/17/02 - The replacement engine is cleaned up, with only 70k miles it still looked and ran like new when pulled from an 85 Shelby Charger. The engine has a ported MP heap also. The engine was cleaned and the paint on the block and valve cover were touched up. A new oil pump was installed for good measure. Can't wait to drive this car...
4/06/03 - The car sat dormant for much of the winter, the engine compartment was cleaned and re-painted. The trans was also cleaned and repainted. The rusty doors and fenders were removed to make way for ones pulled from the horizon parts car.
11/09/02 - An 88 Plymouth Horizon sacrifices it's rust free doors, hatch and floor pans for the cause ( floors are for another car..)
4/17/03 - Most of the interior is removed from the car, the body is stripped of any extra tirm, the rear bumper comes off as well as the rear hatch and the car and the good parts are hauled off to Perfection Auto-Body in Harvard, IL for some dent repair and paint..
6/03/03 - More to come, car is still at the body shop, another 85 GLH-T was picked up for parts and should donate a near mint interior to the car.
